  • H2V59 plans to produce 28,000 T of hydrogen per year by 2023 (2 instalments) with a planned extension to 70,000 per year by 2028 (5 instalments).


  • Direct Reduced Iron Project: ArcelorMittal is studying the implementation of an innovative solution for producing low-carbon steel in partnership with AirLiquide. The project aims to combine a Direct Reduced Iron plant with arc furnaces to produce cast iron. It plans to use low carbon hydrogen and will provide CO2 savings. This partnership between Air Liquide and ArcelorMittal is the first stage in the creation of an ecosystem at the forefront of low-carbon solutions for hydrogen and CO2 capture, which will be a source of competitiveness and appeal for the various stakeholders in the Dunkirk industrial and port basin.

  • SHYMED : SHYMED (Hydrogen Solution for Electric Mobility in the Dunkirk Area, Hynamics – EDF): In January 2024, the project will see the commissioning of a 1 MW green hydrogen production and distribution station on the Dunkirk Energy Recovery Centre site to power buses and rubbish trucks in particular. The Greater Dunkirk Urban Council, EDF, Hynamics (subsidiary 100 % owned by EDF), DALKIA Wastenergy and Transdev are working together on this project which will help to prevent the emission of 1,200 T of CO2 from the year 2024, then 2,200 T/year in the medium term.


  • C2FUEL (Engie) : The project aims to develop competitive technologies for CO2 capture and conversion that replace fossil fuels. On an industrially relevant scale, the C2FUEL consortium will demonstrate the capture of CO2 from industrial gas effluents and their conversion into formic acid and dimethyl ether as chemical energy vectors. These e-fuels will be used in the local area for boat shuttles/lorries and the transport and storage of green electricity. The concept will benefit from a particularly strategic location as demonstrated by Dunkirk: it is located between the DK6 combined cycle power plant, the ArcelorMittal steelworks and one of the main European ports, the perfect showcase for future reproduction. The CO2 present in blast furnace gas will be selectively removed and combined with the green hydrogen generated by the electrolysis of water. In addition, the system is powered by renewable electricity. It will allow the CO2 emissions from the steel plant and surplus electricity in the Dunkirk region to be reused and improve the operational and environmental performances of the DK6 combined cycle at the same time. The C2Fuel project consortium comprises 11 partners from 7 countries. The project received 4 million euros of funding from the European Union’s research and innovation project Horizon 2020 (subsidy No.838014).


  • Little Cithy (Engie), GRHYD, (Engie): the 1st Power to Gas project in France, carried out in Cappelle-la-Grande, piloted by ENGIE in association with the Greater Dunkirk Urban Council and 9 other partners, has demonstrated the technical feasibility and environmental pertinence of a greener urban gas with very promising results. 20 % hydrogen by volume in natural gas leads to:
    LESS 6% of CO2 emissions (20 t CO2 eq. avoided each year)
    LESS 63% of CO,
    LESS 42% NOx.

Following GRHYD, ENGIE is launching a pre-feasibility study for a new project called “Little Cithy”, which goes one step further in the integration of hydrogen
for household energy needs in an eco-neighbourhood of Cappelle-la-Grande, in partnership with the Greater Dunkirk Urban Council, the town of Cappelle-la-Grande, the Region Hauts-de-France and the property developer SIA Habitat.
