Dunkirk has a European hinterland with a highly developed wide-gauge network not only in the Nord-Pas de Calais Picardie (Hauts de France region) but also in the direction of eastern Europe, Benelux, Germany, and soon, with the future Seine-North Europe link, to the Paris basin. Dunkirk is the region’s largest waterway port. The wide-gauge canal between Dunkirk and Valenciennes takes barges of 3,000 tonnes, while the waterway network of Belgium and the Rhine is accessible to vessels of 1,350 tonnes.
